Current situation to avian influenza

Extinction of avian influenza in the District of Emsland

The lifting of the entire observation area in all three counties will enter into force on the 03.09.2015. The avian influenza is thus extinguished. The investigations into the lifting of the observation area are completed. In these investigations found evidence of for the presence of infection with avian influenza viruses either clinical or laboratory diagnosis.

The outbreak of the highly pathogenic form of the bird flu (avian influenza) in a company with 10,000 laying hens was detected in the Emsland district on the 26.07.2015 officially. The district Emsland had taken all necessary measures to combat the disease. These measures included the establishment of a Sperrbezirkes with a radius of one kilometer around the infected farm, as well as an observation area with a radius of 10 kilometers and others. Poultry must be neither obstruct nor taken out in these areas. To prevent a spread of the highly contagious influenza virus, already all laying hens kept in the outbreak, as well as all birds in two other plants were killed in accordance with the provisions of the regulation to protect against the avian influenza animal welfare-friendly, which were in the neighborhood for the operation of the outbreak. The samples of the structures in the Sperrbezirk examined directly after determining outbreak were all negative found be.
Contact holdings were determined by epidemiological investigations. In these establishments were sampled and in the NDS. National Office for consumer protection and food safety with negative influenza examined on avian.

The current state of knowledge does not is a danger for the people.

You will find the press release here.

In Lower Saxony the last outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza of type H5N8 in December 2014 in the district were Cloppenburg and established in the District of Emsland. In March and in June 2015 there were outbreaks of low pathogenic form of avian influenza H7N7 type in the District of Cuxhaven, and in the District of Emsland.

For years there outbreaks around the world. Currently, in the North West of England, in the County of Lancaster, reported an HPAI outbreak in a laying hen operation. So far nearly 50 million affected animals the United States ravaged by America in this year of particularly severe outbreaks of HPAI.

Many counties and county-level cities have repealed the obligation to install now or it is a partial stall duty. See the animal health official General decrees on the respective websites of the districts.

You will find here an overview map with the on housing arrangements in Lower Saxony, Germany.

The Ministry adopted an express regulation (poultry shipment limitation Regulation (GeflVerbBeschränkV)) on the 22.12.2014. This was changed (consolidated version) on the 18.01.2015 and committed to research on highly pathogenic virus influenza A virus of subtypes H5 and H7 perform all duck - and goose holder before transport. Per consignment, 60 animals are to be sampled. It's less than 60 animals, are to examine all ducks or geese.

Monitoring studies in wild birds and domestic poultry populations are carried out regularly in Lower Saxony, Germany. More than 2,500 samples from about 200 herds have been examined in the Hausgeflügelmonitoring. So far about 770 samples have been examined in the Wildvogelmonitoring. All research on the bird flu virus were negative.

Information about avian influenza (AI)

When the avian influenza viruses distinction can in principle between two groups, the so-called low pathogenic ("little ill be") and the highly pathogenic ("very sick-making") influenza viruses. The highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (especially H5N1) can result in poultry, such as chickens or turkeys to high animal losses. The low pathogenic influenza viruses, however, often just call up at all no disease signs out low the properties to raise a serious illness absence of these viruses.

Because the influenza virus in wild birds can survive, can cause repeatedly outbreaks of AI, which can spill over occasionally - in compliance with all safety measures - to House poultry stocks.

You will find the current legislation left next to this article.

No danger for people!

Regularly perform surveys in poultry and wild birds in Germany and the Netherlands as well as in the other EU Member States. They have been so far no indication of an influenza activity.

Wild birds (particularly duck) are often silent carriers of the low pathogenic form of avian influenza. Perhaps the introduction of cause to suspect is here.

Bio-security measures

Always the danger of a further development of a highly contagious bird disease is also the little contagious variant of bird flu. Until the current path of infection is not clear, everything must be done to prevent any further infections. Include measures of hygiene (locks, disinfectant mats, protective clothing for visitors - who should stay out dear!) and documentation (visitor book - is there also the electrician!, writing supplies to and from the inventory...). This also applies to private stocks. These measures serve to protect of all private and commercial poultry holdings.

Occurrence of avian influenza (H5N1) to wild birds

If a case of avian influenza in wild birds, are measures to take to avoid spreading the infection to House poultry stocks.

So a Sperrbezirk of at least 3 kilometres are RADIUS and an observation area of at least 10 km around each site of an infected wild bird set RADIUS. In these zones, is among other things to examine all poultry, thorough disinfection measures must be effected and observed trade restrictions. In the observation area (including Sperrbezirk) dogs and cats may not freely run around. These restrictions apply for 30 days if no new cases occur.

According to a risk assessment by the veterinary services, which comes to the conclusion that there is no risk of transmission on House poultry stocks, can be omitted also on the establishment of Sperrbezirk and/or observation area. A low risk of transmission, a so-called restricted area can be set up in their place with RADIUS a scaled-down observation area of at least 3 km radius of at least 1 km.

In the natural cycle, the dying of individual animals is a normal process. Especially in the winter, old and ill animals die by cold or by poor nutrition more frequently than in other seasons. Therefore, not every dead bird must have died of avian influenza. Only when several birds seem much sick or on one place are found dead, should notify the competent veterinary office or the police.

Please do not touch dead or sick birds or take.

Please inform your children.

The feeding of ducks, geese or swans should be avoided to reduce the risk of transmission among birds.

A threat to the population is after we omitted. The human infections reported from other countries was carried out only after intensive direct contact with infected poultry. It is easy to understand, that, where human and poultry under one roof live closely together, from the perspective of epidemics hygiene considerably worse conditions than in our regions with a totally different structure of animal husbandry.

Also the consumption of poultry meat, eggs and other poultry products is safe. Even if an infection of domestic poultry populations, no danger expected, because the virus already in + 70 ° Celsius - and therefore in the usual kitchen-moderate preparation - when killed, sure is for the consumer.

All competent authorities monitor closely the further development of avian influenza in Europe. Due to extensive preparations, it is today well positioned and has prepared the necessary alarm and crisis plans.

You can limit the risk of a large-scale epidemic outbreak in commercial poultry in Germany only in strict compliance with the measures of caution. Please help the authorities by your behavior.

By the way: the probability of dying in the future on a severe 'flu' (human influenza) is significantly higher than to become infected with avian influenza! You can have yourself vaccinated against influenza. The more people vaccinated, the higher the protection of the population. Your family doctor / your doctor can give you more information.
